The Kalanchoe thyrsiflora is a striking succulent, admired for its large, rounded leaves arranged in beautiful, layered rosettes. Its fleshy, paddle-shaped leaves are usually pale green with a powdery coating and can develop attractive red edges when exposed to bright sunlight. With its sculptural shape and distinctive foliage, this easy-care plant makes a beautiful statement in any indoor plant collection.

Native to southern Africa, Kalanchoe thyrsiflora is adapted to sunny environments and dry conditions. Commonly known as the Flapjack Plant, it stores water in its thick leaves, allowing it to tolerate periods of drought. With plenty of bright light, minimal watering and well-draining soil, this succulent can maintain its compact shape and develop beautiful leaf colouring.

Care

Light

Place your Kalanchoe thyrsiflora in a bright location with plenty of natural light. It can tolerate several hours of direct sunlight, which encourages compact growth and may enhance the reddish colouring along the leaf edges. Acclimatise the plant gradually when increasing its exposure to direct sun to prevent leaf scorch. A sunny windowsill is ideal for maintaining healthy foliage and a strong, sculptural shape.

Water

Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. As a succulent, Kalanchoe thyrsiflora stores water in its thick leaves and is sensitive to overwatering. Water thoroughly once the soil is dry, and allow excess water to drain away freely. Reduce watering during the cooler months when growth slows. A well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix and a pot with drainage holes are essential to help prevent root rot.

Temperature

Kalanchoe thyrsiflora thrives in warm conditions, ideally between 18 and 27°C. Protect it from frost and prolonged exposure to temperatures below approximately 10°C. Average indoor humidity is generally sufficient, making this plant well suited to typical household environments. During the growing season, occasional feeding with a diluted succulent fertiliser can support healthy growth. Avoid excessive watering and ensure the plant receives enough light to maintain its compact rosette shape.
