Calluna Vulgaris

Calluna vulgaris, commonly known as Scotch Heather or Common Heather, is an outdoor evergreen plant known for its delicate, bell-shaped flowers and fine, needle-like foliage. Depending on the variety, its flowers can range from white and pink to deep purple, adding a beautiful touch of colour to gardens, balconies and containers.

This is a hardy, low-growing plant with a naturally compact growth habit. It is particularly valued for its long flowering period, with many varieties blooming from late summer well into autumn. Its flowers are also attractive to bees and other pollinators, making it a lovely choice for a wildlife-friendly garden.

Common Heather is native to large parts of Europe, including the British Isles, Scandinavia and the mountainous regions of Central Europe. It naturally grows on acidic, nutrient-poor soils in heathlands, moors and open woodland areas. Its ability to thrive in challenging conditions makes it a particularly resilient plant.

Care

Water: Keep the soil lightly moist, especially during the growing season. Avoid letting the plant sit in water. Rainwater or other low-lime water is ideal, as Calluna vulgaris prefers acidic conditions.

Light: Place your Calluna in a sunny to partially shaded position. Plenty of light encourages healthy growth and abundant flowering.

Temperature: Calluna vulgaris is very hardy and can tolerate low temperatures and frost. It is well suited to outdoor planting and can remain outside throughout winter in most climates.

Feeding: Calluna vulgaris has modest nutritional requirements. Feed sparingly with an acidic-plant fertiliser during spring and summer. Avoid excessive fertilisation, as this can lead to weak growth.
