The Kalanchoe thyrsiflora, also known as the Paddle Plant or Flapjack Plant, is a striking succulent houseplant with rounded leaves arranged in a beautiful rosette. Its thick, fleshy leaves are green with reddish-purple edges that become more pronounced when the plant receives plenty of sunlight.

Origin of the Kalanchoe thyrsiflora

The Kalanchoe thyrsiflora is native to South Africa, where it naturally grows in dry, sunny environments. As a succulent, it stores water in its thick leaves, allowing it to withstand periods of drought. In its natural habitat, the plant is exposed to plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. This explains why the Kalanchoe thyrsiflora prefers a bright position and should not be kept in constantly wet soil.

Water
The Kalanchoe thyrsiflora is a drought-tolerant succulent plant and does not need much water. Allow the potting soil to dry out completely before watering again. When watering, give the plant a thorough drink and allow excess water to drain away. During autumn and winter, water less frequently, as the plant's growth slows down and the soil dries out more slowly.

Light
Place the Kalanchoe thyrsiflora in a spot with plenty of bright light. It can handle several hours of direct sunlight, which can also intensify the beautiful red and purple tones along the leaf edges. When moving the plant to a much sunnier location, do so gradually to prevent the leaves from getting sunburned.

Fertilizer
During spring and summer, feed the Kalanchoe thyrsiflora once every four to six weeks with a fertilizer suitable for succulents or cacti. The plant has relatively low nutritional requirements, so avoid over-fertilizing. During autumn and winter, additional fertilizer is generally not necessary.

Temperature
The Kalanchoe thyrsiflora prefers a warm and bright environment, with temperatures between 18 and 27°C being ideal during the growing season. It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures, but protect the plant from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C. Good airflow and a dry environment around the leaves help keep this succulent houseplant healthy.
