Calathea makoyana, commonly known as the Peacock Plant, is a beautiful tropical houseplant prized for its elegant foliage and distinctive leaf patterns. Its large, oval leaves feature a soft green background with darker green feather-like markings on the upper surface, while the undersides display a striking purple to burgundy colour.
The combination of contrasting colours and intricate patterns gives the Calathea makoyana an almost painted appearance. New leaves emerge rolled up and gradually unfurl, revealing their decorative pattern as they mature.
Like other members of the Marantaceae family, the plant has a fascinating natural movement known as nyctinasty. In response to changing light conditions, the leaves can move upwards in the evening and lower again during the day. This gives the plant a lively, dynamic character.
Care
Light
Place your Calathea makoyana in a bright location with indirect or filtered light. Avoid strong direct sunlight, as this can scorch the delicate leaves and cause the beautiful patterns to fade. A spot near an east- or north-facing window is often ideal.
Water
Keep the soil evenly and lightly moist, but never waterlogged. Allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings, while avoiding letting the root ball dry out completely. Calatheas appreciate consistent moisture and are sensitive to prolonged drought. Using room-temperature, low-mineral water can help prevent brown leaf edges.
Temperature
Calathea makoyana prefers warm, stable temperatures, ideally around 18–27°C. Protect it from cold draughts, sudden temperature changes and temperatures below approximately 15°C.
Humidity
High humidity is especially beneficial. Aim for 50–70% or higher where possible. A humidifier or a naturally humid room can help the plant maintain healthy, attractive foliage.
