The Monstera deliciosa is admired for its large, glossy green leaves and distinctive natural splits and holes that develop as the plant matures. Its lush foliage and tropical appearance make it a popular houseplant and a beautiful statement piece for any indoor space.
This tropical climbing plant belongs to the Araceae family and originates from the tropical rainforests of Central America, particularly southern Mexico. It is characterised by its large, heart-shaped leaves, which develop distinctive splits and oval-shaped holes as the plant matures. These unique leaf patterns are known as fenestrations and give the plant its recognisable appearance. In its natural habitat, the Monstera climbs trees using aerial roots, allowing it to reach greater heights in search of light. Under suitable conditions, it can also produce edible fruit with a sweet, tropical flavour.
Height: 70 cm
Pot diameter: 19.5 cm
Care
Light
Place your Monstera deliciosa in a bright location with plenty of indirect natural light. It can tolerate some partial shade, but brighter conditions generally encourage healthier growth and the development of its characteristic leaf splits and holes. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, as this can scorch the leaves. A spot near an east- or west-facing window is often suitable.
Water
Water your Monstera deliciosa when the top few centimetres of soil have dried out. Allow excess water to drain freely and avoid keeping the soil constantly wet, as this can lead to root rot. During the growing season, the plant may require more frequent watering, while watering can be reduced during the cooler months when growth slows down.
Temperature
The Monstera deliciosa prefers warm conditions, ideally between 18 and 27°C. Protect it from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, and avoid temperatures below 15°C. Average household humidity is generally suitable, although higher humidity can encourage healthy leaf development. Use a well-draining, airy potting mix to support healthy root development. As the plant is a natural climber, providing a moss pole or other support can encourage larger leaves and more mature growth. During the growing season, feed occasionally with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser, following the manufacturer's instructions.
