Its vibrant greenery and compact form create a fresh appearance, making it a beautiful decorative feature for a home or office. The Ligustrum, commonly known as Privet and botanically belonging to the genus Ligustrum, is a woody shrub native to Europe, Asia and other regions, depending on the species. It is widely cultivated as a bonsai because of its small leaves, vigorous growth and ability to develop a dense, well-branched structure. As a bonsai tree, it benefits from regular pruning, adequate light and consistent watering to maintain its compact proportions and attractive shape.

Care
Light
Place your Ligustrum Bonsai in a bright location with plenty of natural light. Several hours of indirect sunlight each day help support healthy foliage, strong growth and compact branching. When growing the bonsai indoors, position it near a bright window, preferably where it receives ample daylight. However, a Ligustrum Bonsai generally benefits from outdoor conditions during the growing season, where natural light and good air circulation encourage vigorous development. If moving the tree outdoors, gradually acclimatise it to stronger sunlight to prevent leaf scorch. Avoid keeping it in a dark corner or a location with insufficient light, as this may result in weaker growth and leaf loss.
Water
Water your Ligustrum Bonsai thoroughly whenever the upper layer of the growing medium begins to dry. The soil should retain some moisture without becoming waterlogged. Ensure that excess water can drain freely from the pot, as prolonged saturation can lead to root problems. During warmer weather and periods of active growth, the tree may require more frequent watering, while water requirements generally decrease during cooler conditions. Check the soil regularly rather than following a fixed watering schedule, as the ideal frequency depends on temperature, light levels, airflow and pot size. Avoid allowing the root ball to dry out completely, particularly during hot or windy weather.
Fertilizer and trimming
During the growing season, feed your Ligustrum Bonsai with a balanced bonsai fertiliser according to the manufacturer's instructions. Regular pruning helps control its size, maintain its desired shape and encourage dense branching. Trim new shoots as needed, while allowing sufficient growth to support the tree's health and development. Repotting may be necessary periodically as the root system develops, ideally at a suitable time for the particular species.
