Chinese Lantern Plants, commonly known as Abutilon or Flowering Maple, are native to tropical and subtropical regions of South America, Central America and other warm parts of the world. They are valued as ornamental plants for their distinctive pendant flowers, which resemble small lanterns, and their attractive foliage. Their colourful flowers and elegant growth make them a popular choice for bright indoor spaces.

Care

Light
Place your Chinese Lantern Plant in a bright location with plenty of indirect sunlight. A few hours of gentle direct sunlight, particularly in the morning or late afternoon, can encourage healthy growth and flowering. Avoid intense midday sunlight through glass, as this can scorch the leaves.

Water
Keep the soil lightly and evenly moist during the growing and flowering season. Water when the top layer of soil feels slightly dry, allowing excess water to drain away freely. Avoid allowing the plant to stand in water, as consistently waterlogged soil can lead to root problems. During the cooler months, reduce watering as the plant's growth slows down.

Temperature
Chinese Lantern Plants prefer warm conditions and thrive at normal indoor temperatures. Keep the plant away from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes. Ideally, maintain temperatures above approximately 15°C and provide good airflow around the plant. During the warmer months, the plant can also benefit from being placed outdoors in a sheltered, bright position.
