The Carmona Bonsai is a charming and elegant miniature tree, admired for its small, glossy dark green leaves, delicate white flowers and beautifully textured trunk. One of its most distinctive characteristics is its ability to produce tiny white flowers under suitable growing conditions, adding an extra touch of beauty to its lush green foliage.

The Carmona, commonly known as the Fukien Tea Tree and botanically known as Ehretia microphylla (also widely sold under the synonym Carmona retusa), is an evergreen tropical shrub native to parts of Asia, including southern China and regions of Southeast Asia. Under suitable conditions, the Carmona may flower several times throughout the year. As a tropical species, it prefers a warm, bright environment and is sensitive to cold temperatures. It is commonly grown as an indoor bonsai in cooler climates, where consistent warmth, adequate light and careful watering help maintain healthy growth. Regular pruning and occasional feeding encourage a compact canopy and preserve its elegant proportions.

Care

Light

Place your Carmona Bonsai in a bright location with plenty of natural light. A position near a south- or west-facing window can be suitable, provided the tree is gradually acclimatised to direct sunlight. Good light is essential for maintaining its glossy green leaves, supporting healthy growth and encouraging flowering. During warm summer weather, the bonsai can also be placed outdoors in a sheltered position with partial sunlight, as long as nighttime temperatures remain sufficiently warm. Avoid sudden changes in light conditions, as these may cause leaf drop. The Carmona is best suited to a bright indoor environment in cooler climates and should not be left outdoors when temperatures become too low.

Water

Water your Carmona Bonsai regularly to keep the growing medium evenly moist without allowing it to become waterlogged. Check the soil frequently and water thoroughly when the surface begins to dry. Because the tree is planted in a relatively small pot, the soil may dry out quickly, particularly in warm or sunny conditions. Allow excess water to drain freely and never leave the pot standing in water, as this can lead to root problems. Avoid letting the root ball dry out completely, as Carmona can be sensitive to inconsistent watering and may respond to drought stress by dropping its leaves. Watering frequency depends on temperature, light levels, humidity and the season, so monitor the soil rather than following a fixed schedule.

Temperature

The Carmona Bonsai is a tropical tree that thrives in warm, stable conditions. Ideally, maintain temperatures of approximately 18–25°C and protect the tree from cold draughts, sudden temperature changes and temperatures below around 12–15°C. It is not frost-tolerant and should be kept indoors during colder weather. Moderate humidity is beneficial, particularly in centrally heated rooms where the air can become dry. Good air circulation helps maintain healthy foliage, while avoiding direct exposure to radiators prevents excessive drying. During the growing season, feed the bonsai with a balanced bonsai fertiliser according to the manufacturer's instructions. Light pruning helps maintain its compact shape and encourages dense branching, while careful ongoing maintenance supports healthy foliage and potential flowering. With the right combination of warmth, light and consistent care, the Carmona Bonsai can remain an attractive and rewarding addition to your indoor plant collection.
