The Peperomia graveolens is a distinctive succulent houseplant, admired for its fleshy, V-shaped leaves with bright green upper surfaces and striking red undersides. Its compact growth habit and unusual colouring give it a sculptural appearance, making it a beautiful addition to any indoor plant collection. Easy to care for and relatively drought-tolerant, this unique plant is an excellent choice for lovers of unusual foliage.
Native to Ecuador, Peperomia graveolens grows naturally in dry, rocky environments. Its thick leaves store water, allowing it to tolerate periods of dryness. Also known for its distinctive red leaf margins and compact growth, this species thrives with plenty of bright light, careful watering and a well-draining growing medium.

Care
Light
Place your Peperomia graveolens in a bright location with plenty of indirect sunlight. It can tolerate some gentle direct sunlight, which may help enhance the red colouring of its leaves. Avoid intense midday sun, particularly behind glass, as this can scorch the foliage. A bright windowsill with filtered light is ideal for healthy, compact growth.
Water
Allow the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings. As a succulent, Peperomia graveolens stores water in its fleshy leaves and is sensitive to overwatering. Water thoroughly when the growing medium is dry, and allow excess water to drain away freely. Reduce watering during the cooler months when growth slows. A well-draining soil mix and a pot with drainage holes are essential to prevent root rot.
Temperature
Peperomia graveolens prefers warm indoor temperatures between 18 and 26°C. Protect it from cold draughts and temperatures below approximately 10–12°C. Average indoor humidity is generally sufficient, so additional humidity is usually unnecessary. During the growing season, occasional feeding with a diluted, balanced houseplant fertiliser can support healthy growth. Avoid excessive fertilisation and prolonged exposure to cold or wet conditions.
