Mammillaria is one of the most diverse and popular groups of small cacti, loved for its compact shape, intricate spines and beautiful flowers. Also known as the Pincushion Cactus, Mammillaria species range from small, solitary globes to clustering plants that gradually form attractive groups.
Unlike many other cacti, Mammillaria does not have traditional ribs. Instead, its stems are covered with distinctive tubercles – small, rounded, nipple-like projections arranged in a characteristic spiral pattern. Each tubercle bears an areole from which the spines emerge. Depending on the species, the spines can be fine and hair-like, white and woolly, or more pronounced and colourful.
One of the most attractive features of Mammillaria is its flowering. Mature, healthy plants can produce numerous small, funnel-shaped flowers that often appear in a ring or crown around the top of the plant. Flower colours vary between species and can include white, cream, yellow, pink, red and purple.
The Mammillaria genus is native primarily to Mexico, but its natural range extends from the central and southwestern United States through Mexico and into parts of Central America, the Caribbean and northern South America. The genus contains a large diversity of species, with plants adapted to dry desert, rocky and seasonally dry habitats.
Its remarkable diversity is one of the reasons Mammillaria is so popular among cactus enthusiasts. Different species can look surprisingly different, from densely woolly globes to elongated, heavily spined forms. Many are also readily propagated from seed or offsets and are widely cultivated.
Care
Light
Mammillaria enjoys plenty of bright light. Place it in a bright, sunny spot, preferably with several hours of direct sunlight. If moving a plant from a darker location into strong sunlight, acclimatise it gradually to prevent sun damage.
Water
Water moderately during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Always use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix and avoid leaving the roots in standing water. During winter, reduce watering considerably and keep the plant almost completely dry.
Temperature
Mammillaria prefers warm conditions during the growing season. In winter, it benefits from a cool, dry resting period, but it should be protected from frost. A bright, cool room is ideal as long as the plant is kept dry.
Tip: Mammillaria is a great choice for both beginners and experienced cactus lovers. With plenty of light and careful watering, even a small plant can reward you with a beautiful crown of flowers.
