The Jade Bonsai is a beautiful and characterful miniature tree, admired for its thick, woody trunk, delicate branching and small, fleshy green leaves. Its succulent foliage gives the plant a fresh, vibrant appearance, while its sturdy trunk and naturally sculptural growth create the classic look of a miniature tree. Relatively easy to care for and tolerant of short periods of dryness, it is an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced bonsai enthusiasts.

The Jade Bonsai is commonly cultivated from Portulacaria afra, a succulent shrub native to South Africa, where it grows in warm, sunny environments. Also known as the Elephant Bush or Dwarf Jade, this species is popular for bonsai cultivation because of its small leaves, flexible branches and ability to develop a thick, woody trunk over time. Unlike many traditional bonsai trees, the Jade Bonsai stores water in its fleshy leaves and stems, making it more drought-tolerant. With plenty of light, careful watering and regular pruning, it can develop into a compact and beautifully shaped miniature tree.

Care

Light

Place your Jade Bonsai in a bright location with plenty of natural light. It thrives in bright, indirect sunlight and can tolerate several hours of direct sunlight once gradually acclimatised. A sunny windowsill near a south- or west-facing window is often ideal for maintaining compact growth and healthy green foliage. Insufficient light can cause elongated branches and sparse growth. During the warmer months, the bonsai can also be placed outdoors in a sunny, sheltered location, provided temperatures remain suitable.

Water

As a succulent plant, the Jade Bonsai stores water in its fleshy leaves and stems and therefore requires less frequent watering than many other bonsai species. Allow the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings, then water thoroughly and let the excess drain away. Avoid keeping the growing medium constantly moist, as excessive water can quickly lead to root rot. During the cooler months, when growth slows, reduce watering further. Always use a pot with drainage holes and a well-draining bonsai soil mix to keep the roots healthy.

Temperature

The Jade Bonsai prefers warm conditions and grows best at temperatures between 18 and 27°C. Protect it from frost and prolonged exposure to temperatures below approximately 10°C. It appreciates good air circulation and relatively dry conditions compared with tropical bonsai species. During the growing season, feed your Jade Bonsai with a balanced fertiliser suitable for succulents or bonsai, following the product instructions. Regular pruning helps maintain its compact shape and encourages branching, while allowing the soil to dry between waterings supports healthy root development and long-term growth.
