The Alocasia amazonica is admired for its large, arrow-shaped leaves, deep green colour and contrasting silvery-white veins. The sculptural foliage and glossy finish give this plant a dramatic, exotic appearance, making it a beautiful statement piece in any indoor plant collection. With its bold leaf patterns and elegant upright growth, the Alocasia amazonica is an excellent choice for plant enthusiasts looking to add a tropical touch to their interior.
Despite its name, Alocasia amazonica is a cultivated hybrid rather than a plant native to the Amazon rainforest. Commonly known as the African Mask Plant, it is appreciated for its distinctive foliage and compact growth habit. It thrives in warm, humid conditions with bright, indirect light and consistent moisture. With the right care, its beautiful leaves can continue to develop, creating a lush and eye-catching display.

Care
Light
Place your Alocasia amazonica in a bright location with plenty of indirect sunlight. Good lighting supports healthy growth and helps maintain the striking contrast of its dark green leaves and pale veins. Avoid strong direct sunlight, as this can scorch the foliage and cause discolouration. A position near an east-facing window or slightly away from a bright south-facing window is ideal.
Water
Keep the soil lightly and evenly moist, allowing the top layer to dry slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly when the surface of the growing medium begins to feel dry, and allow excess water to drain away freely. Avoid leaving the roots standing in water, as this can lead to root rot. During the cooler months, reduce watering slightly as growth may slow. A well-draining, airy potting mix helps maintain healthy roots.
Temperature
Alocasia amazonica thrives in warm, humid conditions, ideally between 18 and 27°C. Protect it from cold draughts, sudden temperature changes and temperatures below approximately 15°C. Higher humidity helps keep the leaves looking healthy and can reduce the risk of dry leaf edges. Good air circulation is beneficial, but avoid placing the plant directly next to heating or air-conditioning vents. During the growing season, feed occasionally with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser to support healthy leaf development.
