He gave a ‘Traité du scorbut’ (1671), but is more known for his ‘Tableau de l'amour conjugal, ou l'Histoire complète de la génération de l'homme’
This book, published in 1686 in Amsterdam under the title of “Tableau de l'amour humain considéré dans l'état du mariage” and under the pseudonym of Salocini, Vénitien (anagram of Nicolas Venette), is regarded as the first Treaty of Sexology in the West. Real best-seller, he has seen 33 editions by 1903, and has been translated into English, Spanish, German and Dutch. The author covers in four parts everything that has to do with sex: Anatomy,
reproduction, desire, impotence, sterility... He quotes on each topic the ancient and medieval authors, adding his own comments or those of more recent authors, and comments where common sense prevails. The whole presents an ambiguous mixture of serious and light words, on the edge of erotic literature. According to André Dupras, Venette offers a solution to the crisis of love raging at his time advocating a balance between the love impulse and religious imperatives. On the one hand, he seeks to defuse the sexual fears, to change the pessimistic visions of love and sexuality. On the other hand, he invites the reader to tame the amorous passions by reason and natural law. The book is not only an instruction manual that disseminates information on sexuality; It also adopts the aiming of a book of education because it offers a new way of being and living love in the marital status.
