The woodcut was initially used as illustrations to Ulrich Tengler's 'Layen Spiegel', Augsburg: Otmar, 1509.
The letterpress text on the impressions, however, identifies them as illustrations to one of Geiler's 'Predigt' books, most likely the Brösamlein von des hochgelerten Keiserpergs tisch so er in vil malen pepredigt hatt', Strasbourg: Grüninger, 1517. It seems that most of the woodcuts were previously used in other publications printed by Grüninger from 1510 onwards, such as the Plenarium (1510) or Geiler's sermons on the Virgin (1512).
Woodcutter: Hans Franck (printmaker; painter/draughtsman; Swiss; c.1485 - 1522 before)
Painter and designer of woodcuts. Active in Basel 1505-22. He was a contemporary of Urs Graf whom he accompanied on numerous mercenary campaigns, including the battle of Novara in 1515. He worked in Basel chiefly as a wall-painter, and seems to have specialised in the type of decoration of buildings later used by Hans Holbein the Younger during his years in Basel. Schmid and others have identified him with the Monogrammist HF (active 1516-22 in Basel) whose woodcuts and drawings reveal an inventive personality and are akin to the manner of Graf.
He died in Basel.
